Had new gutters, fascias and felt fitted to front and rear of our terraced house by Hallmark Roofing and Guttering Services and dealt with James. They had satisfactorily refitted a neighbouring house and we chose Hallmark on that recommendation.
James and his co-worker arrived the day following my first contact with Hallmark and started the work.
An hour later James had left and his co-worker visibly struggled to do the job unassisted. When I phoned James he insisted that it was not a problem for his worker to do the job on his own.
When the gutters were fitted there were some cosmetic problems which I pointed out to James and he did sort them out. I asked James if he was going to test the watertightedness of the gutters by pouring water into them and he said no. He said the gutters would prove watertight during the next rainfall. I paid James in full at that stage. After they left I noticed a lot of bits of old downpipe fixings thrown under a tree in the front garden, on inspection I also noticed that the new downpipe was secured to the house at only one point between the roof and the ground and that fitting was only secured with ONE screw. The following day we had heavy rain and the gutters were leaking at each of the four points where they adjoined the neighbouring houses front and back. I called James and eventually he came back and applied mastic to the joints assuring us that the gutters were now watertight. The next time it rained the gutters continued to leak at the four points of connection. I called James again and he eventually came back. He said that our neighbours gutters were of a type that didn't connect well with ours. When I asked him if he shouldn't have universal connectors that would accomodate such differences he replied that he had no responsibility for our neighbours' gutters. He told us he would return to sort out the problem but despite repeated phone calls, emails and texts over a period of several months we got no response from Hallmark. At that time the Hallmark business card had an address at Brittas and while we drove out there we found no business at the address. The phone calls were never answered and no answering machine service was available. We just presumed they had gone out of business. We now have issues with damp on our interior walls and every time it rains the water literally pours down from the four corners of our roof. I paid James two thousand euros for the job - money which we had borrowed and are still repaying to make our home secure. We are a couple in our seventies and we have both cancer and asthma in the house. James knew this and in spite of everything he never returned and left us in this state. Even if I had the cash to get someone else to make our gutters watertight I would have no confidence in giving the job again. James, you know who we are and I'm sure we are not an isolated case. Shame on you. At night when I hear the rain pouring down from the roof I can't sleep for worrying about the effect it's having on our home and our health. I couldn't believe when I saw your so-called company adverisement saying "you've made the right decision" with Hallmark - prospective customers BEWARE HALLMARK - choosing Hallmark to replace our gutters was the worst decision I could have made.
